This question has been a controversial issue for many years. In the past, The work was divided, men work outside to earn a living. Whereas women stayed home to do the housework and take car of children.
However, it wasn't fair as many people -especially women - believed. Because women worked day and night at home, while men just did their work outside ,and it didn't matter whether they worked for twelve hours or just one. The idea was that the housework is a feminine thing.
As the time passed, and the (equal rights) movement started, there were some changes. It's difficult to say whether the situation has changed toward better development. Although women have the right to work, in many cases they work both outside and inside.
In addition, the time they spend at home with their children has become too short. Therefore, the birth rate has been decreasing year after year especially in the modern countries like the USA and the UK.
Nowadays, there are a lot of women who choose to stay home with their babies until they grow up, and then they go back to work. Also, working women are demanding for longer maternity leave after they give a birth.
In my opinion , the answer of such tough question is complex. because it depend on the situation.
However, I'm a Muslim following the Islamic rules -which make it very clear -: Men and women are completely equal, although they are different.Everyone has a convenient role to play. And to live happily together we most share everything.
When the man is at home he should help with the housework. I don't think that it 's important how much they do (20%, 50%, or even 75%) The most important thing is to understand that men and women are not competing. They complete each other.
